Antique Shopping Finds

Happy Monday!  We’re back from our little getaway to the mountains. We all had a wonderful time although I have to say I was a little disappointed.  I would have thought that this time of year would have been the peak time for autumn colors but it wasn’t.  We were a little too early.  The trees were just starting to turn.

While we were there, my daughter-in-law and I did manage to sneak away for a few hours to go to some antiques shops in downtown Luray Virginia and I did purchased a few things.  I bought two burlap bags for $5 a piece.  I’m not sure what I’m going to do with them because they stink to high heaven!  I know burlap has a smell but these burlap bags have a strong burlap smell.  Do all burlap bags have a strong burlap smell?

I also purchased a little burlap peanut bag for fifty cents.  Now that doesn’t smell and it sure is cute

I bought two wooden cheese boxes for $8 a piece.  I already have Christmas plans for them.

And I bought a tin rooster!  I couldn’t resist, I knew immediately what I wanted to do with him.  I’ll be sharing him real soon as I’m already working on him.

If anyone knows how to get that strong burlap smell out of the burlap bags, please let me know.   I would hate to get rid of them, but I don’t want that smell in my house.

As always, thanks for stopping by!

Gail

  2. I love your finds! I haven't seen cheese boxes in years! When cross stitching was the thing for me back in my 20's..I use to cross stitch something big enough to cover the top of the cheese box....take some ribbon around the lid and stain the bottom. Great gifts back then!! I can't wait to see what you do with them! The rooster I love. The sacks...good luck. I have no idea!

  3. The rooster is wonderful! I love all of your finds! Don't know about the burlap but putting fabric in the sun all day helps take bad smells away! ♥

  4. Great finds Gail and what a cute rooster! I know when I bought my burlap table skirt from Ballards it had an odor to it but over time it went away. I wonder if you just leave them outside to air for a few days the odor might go away. Martina

  5. Wonderful finds Gail! Love those type of shopping days, I'd try airing them out in the sun for a few days!

  6. The petro smell of burlap is due to the method of processing. For a non-petro smell, use a hydrocarbon free burlap. This fabric store sells it for a reasonable price. www.onlinefabricstore.net

  9. Hi Gail,
When I bought my burlap it had a terrible smell also. I washed it a couple of times in my washing machine, then I put it in the dryer with several softener sheets and the smell went away. I hope it is the same with your lovely burlap bags. If that does not work and airing it outside doesn't either, try sticking it in the freezer inside of a plastic bag. Perhaps that will help. The freezer is always my last resort for smelly fabrics.=)
I love your rooster, I can't wait to see what you are doing with it.
    Hugs, Cindy

  11. Great picks, Gail! Not sure if this will work on smelly burlap, but when I pick linens that have nasty smells...I soak them in the washer with 2 cups of vinegar added to the water for a couple of hours, then run it through the cycle. Then I soak them again with a cup of baking soda added for a couple of hours and run that through the cycle. Next I do a regular wash cycle with detergent and oxiclean. Whew...!!!
