The Finishing Touches in a Country Kitchen

Hello Everyone!  I made a few more changes to my son and daughter-in-law’s country kitchen.   I built a mantel shelf and placed it above the replica antique wooden ice box.

I bought the corbels at Lowes and added two layers of wood on each one to give it more depth.   The wood I used for the shelving was a piece of  cedar board that was left over from another project.  I attached the corbels to the wall first and then placed the shelving on top.  And then, of course comes the fun part, accessorizing!

Most of the accessories were things she already had.  The other items were either purchased or taken from the stash in my shed.

I really like how this picture turned out below.

I used a framed picture that she had in her kitchen and took it apart.  I painted the oak frame with ASCP graphite and painted the mat (which was a light green) ASCP primer red and applied clear wax to it.   I added a piece of burlap to the back and attached the antique wooden fork and spoon.  The wooden fork and spoon has been in the family for a very long time.  They came from Hawaii back when Pearl Harbor was bombed in 1941.

And did you happen to notice that cute cow chalkboard?  My grandsons sure did and loved what Grandma wrote to them.   I purchased that at Kirkland’s for $5.99…. on clearance!

Isn’t it amazing what a little can of paint can do!  This replica of an antique wooden ice box went from looking like this…..

…….to this.

I think for now, I’m done at their home except for filling a few pin holes in the walls and some touch-up painting in the kitchen from moving things around.   Oh wait a minute, I do have one more thing left.  I need to make pillow shams for my youngest grandson.  He just moved into his new big boy bed!

As always, thanks for your visit and your sweet comments.  They always make my day!

Gail
