Furniture Stripper and Steel Wool

Hello Everyone!

The weather here has been absolutely beautiful except the pollen has been terrible.   I’m really trying to accomplish some of my indoor projects but it is hard as my attention is drawn outdoors.   My “To Do List” for outdoors is steadily growing but until the pollen stops falling, I’ll just keep right on going with my little projects inside.  Hopefully, in the next couple of weeks, I’ll be able to get outside.

This indoor project was a quick and easy one.  About fifteen years ago or maybe longer, I purchased this calendar holder at a craft show.

003

It didn’t look like this when I purchased it though.  It was originally stained.006 I’m showing you the backside because I forgot to take before pictures of it in 2009 when I painted it white.

In 2010, I made changes to the calendar holder again.

I added the wooden appliqué to the top and removed the wooden pegs and replaced them with black hooks.

Well, here we are in 2012, and I made changes to this poor old calendar holder again!

008

This time around, I removed the wooden appliqué and applied a paint and varnish stripper to the entire piece. Then I used steel wool to remove some of the paint.

018

Using the steel wool gave it a grayish undertone which I really like.

As the old saying goes, three strikes and you’re out!  I wonder if this will be the case with this poor dear thing!  It has been through three make-over's already.   For now, I have it back in the kitchen.

004

I only hope that this next project……..

008

…….is as easy as the calendar holder was.

As always, thanks for visiting and hope you all have a wonderful day.

Gail

  1. I like all 3 make overs of the calendar holder. But I think I like the last one best.

  3. Gail I love how the third one turned out. I used to have one of those holders and mine was blue. I think it went to goodwill. Never thought of painting it. Oh well someone is enjoying it.
Now I'm inquisitive on what you are now working on.....

  4. The steel wool made it weathered and chippy, a wonderful look.

  7. Well, you definitely got your monies worth out of that calendar holder, Gail! Great piece and I love the way it looks on your wall with your other pieces. Seeing "furniture stripper" in your post has reminded me that I need to get some for my own side table project {guest bedroom}. I'd like to get started on that soon, but I'd like to get the stripping done and the pieces prepped ahead of time.

  12. I absolutely LOVE it!! I love the way it looks all distressed and old now!!I'm wondering if I could do that to an old dresser that I painted white years ago that didn't turn out good... I was always thinking I would have to completely remove all the paint and varnish underneath and start over (so it sits here as is for now, even though I don't like the way it looks...

  13. I would love to have a calendar holder! I need to come up with one of these. I hate how my calendar DROOPS!

Right now I have it folded in half with a piece of jute run through the fold; but you can't see the pictures! Wah!
    Hmmm...now I'm thinking.

I like the last makeover. I think it looks great next to the stringer, banner, that says "bless this kitchen"!
    All wonderful Goodness.

  16. Every time I visit your blog I look around at my stuff and wonder what I can do to change it up. So now I'm curious what those boards and legs are going to become?
