Hello Everyone!
I have had a few inquiries regarding how I made my Patriotic wreath. So here is my attempt at a tutorial.
The supplies you will need are as follows:
- Flag (60” x 30”)
- Grapeview Wreath (16” or larger)
- Wooden or metal star
- Paint optional if you purchase an unfinished wooden star
- Wire
- Wire cutters
- Hot glue gun
Fold the flag in half. (See picture below)
Cut approximately a 20” piece of wire. Gather the star end of the flag and secure with wire. (See picture below)
Attach wire to the backside of the grapevine wreath. (See picture below)
Now, tuck the flag tail of gathered end inside the grapevine wreath. I do this so that it lays better against a door. (See picture below)
Cut approximately a 20” piece of wire and set aside. Now working on the front side, lay flag across the size of the grapevine wreath as pictured below.
Now gather the striped end upward as pictured below.
With wire, secure to the grapevine wreath running the wire to the backside of the wreath.
Now attach the star with hot glue as pictured below.
And there you go, a Patriot Wreath just in time for Memorial Day!
It’s hard to believe that in just a few days, we will be celebrating Memorial Day. Where has the month of May gone?
As always, thanks for visit and hope you all have a wonderful Memorial Day weekend!

I sure hope you won't be encouraging others to disrespectfully use our flag as home decor where it can touch the ground, be soiled, or knotted up... While I appreciate Gail's intentions in using this flag to decorate her home, this is in direct contradiction with the rules in place we have for its proper use. A simple google search will list these guidelines for those who are interested in maintaining the dignity of this national emblem.
DeleteThat said, there are plenty of fabrics that bear the stars and stripes for use in decor that do so without offending others. Thanks so much!
I am sorry if I have offended anyone. My intent was to honor our flag, not disrespect it. Both my father, father-in law and one son have served in the military. And currently, another one of my sons and my son-in-law are serving in the military. But thank you for pointing out some of the rules for displaying the US flag.
DeleteYour beautiful display is evidence of your love for our country and I know that you mean no harm... I just wanted to call your attention to the guidelines in place so that the flag doesn't become a prop for everyone to use in their wreaths and table settings! It is more than a beautiful textile, it is a representation of freedom and courage all around the world (as we military moms know!)
DeleteYou have a beautiful home and an exciting blog... thanks for hearing me out!
Quite unique and patriotic Gail. We must never forget our lost soldiers.
ReplyDeleteLove it! Thanks for the tutorial. I need to get busy and add some flags outside too.
ReplyDeleteHi Gail,

I ABSOLUTLY LOVE your blog. I just spent a good amount of time scrolling through. I found your blog this morning and was inspired by your mantel shelf in your family room. I just redid my fireplace mantel, and came back to your blog and while it is so tempting to keep looking through, I figured I definitely need to follow your blog. Did I mention how I love it? :) I will be back...
ReplyDeleteabsolutely *** I can spell
DeleteHa! The month of May? Where has 2012 gone so far?
ReplyDeleteGreat and simple - what could be better?
Thank you,
Donna
It's beautiful Gail! Hope you have a lovely weekend =)
ReplyDeleteThe wreath is lovely but I must echo the above commenter and say it is not appropriate to use the flag in this manner. when I saw the wreath I hoped the effect had been done with fabric that had stars and stripes. You could certainly do that and have one just as pretty. But the whole flag should not be used in this manner. You could check with your military loved ones. As a former Air Force officer and mom of Boy Scouts I hope you will change the tutorial to reflect this infomation if nothing else. Have a wonderful summer!
