“What are you going to do with that thing!”

Long before my Dad got sick, he was cleaning out one of his sheds and generated a pile of stuff that he was throwing away.   Being the junky that I am,  I went through his pile of stuff and one of the things that I pulled out was his  work bench that he made a long time ago.  

When I brought it home, I put it in my shed and that’s where it stayed until just the other day.  I was in my shed moving things around and there it was.  I forgot all about it being in there.  It was buried with all my other shed treasures.   

As you can see, he used this work bench through the years.    It has many different colors of paint splatters and plenty of saw marks. 

I can still remember that day when I asked him if I could have his  work bench  and he said to me “what are you going to do with that thing”.    Well Dad, this is what I’ve done with that thing. 

I’m using it as a night stand in my guest bedroom. 

 

I stained the top and bottom with a water based wood stain.  I used Miniwax Natural Wood Stain on the top and River Stone on the bottom.  I used water based wood stain because I didn’t want to completely cover-up the workmanship and worn labor of love on the bench. 

I’m so glad I found it in my shed!  I love having it in my guest bedroom.   I can see my Dad now just shaking his head and saying “the things you come up with”.

Hello Everyone!  Last week I caught Spring fever. So I de-winterized  my home starting in the dining room. 

This is what the dining room place settings looked like for winter. 

This is what it looks like now.  I used the flea market goblets as little vases at each place setting.  I placed a geranium in each goblet.

Rooster Pillow

Hello everyone!  Look at the pillow I made for my rocker in the kitchen.

I can’t believe I did it.  Using the same rooster cut-out as I did on the charger plate, I copied it onto burlap.

  

Using freezer paper, and a piece of burlap I placed the freezer paper on top of the burlap with the shiny side down and ran a medium to dry iron on top of the freezer paper.  The freezer paper adhered to the burlap.   I cut the burlap/freezer paper to 8 1/2” x 11” so that it would run through my printer as a standard piece of paper.  

I placed the burlap face down in the paper feed of my printer and centered the rooster cut-out on the printer/copier glass and hit copy.  This is how it looked. 

I had scraps of fabric left over from kitchen curtains that I made to make the front of the pillow.  I haven’t posted about my kitchen curtains that I made….you can just call me “Little Miss Seamstress…ha ha…it took me all day to make one curtain!  

The back is also made with burlap.

I’m thinking maybe now I should have added a burlap ruffle.  What do you think?

Lang Calendar Picture and a Charger Plate

I love Lang wall calendars and I purchase a new one every year.   They come in all shapes, sizes and themes.  I keep my old Lang wall calendars because they have the most gorgeous artwork.  I have them dated back to 2006.   

I have used  old calendar pictures for many projects.  I have used them to make cards,  covers for journals, bookmarkers, scrapbooking and I have made  decorative boxes just to name a few things. 

Below is a  picture from last years calendar.   I love the rooster and I wanted to use him in my kitchen.    

Using a charger plate that I purchased at a thrift store sometime back and the rooster, this is what I came up with. 

Allowing drying time between each step, I painted the charger plate burnt umber, applied crackle medium on the entire plate and then applied Folk Art Linen.  I stenciled a checkerboard pattern around the outside of the charger plate.  I cut the rooster out and resized him to fit in the center.  I used Mod Podge to adhere the rooster to the charger plate. 

 

This was definitely  a low cost project to do and adds such a nice touch to my kitchen. 

Wait until you see the pillow I made using the same rooster!

Extra Seating

My sister’s place is coming along quite nicely.  Coming from a small condo she lacked extra seating in her new home.  I had a chair in my shed that I purchased at an estate sale sometime back.  I held my breath as I dug through the shed to get it out…..you should see my shed……what a mess!   Oh well, that’s another post.  

As you can see, this chair was in a desperate need of a make-over.  

 

I do believe this chair has received several make-overs before and not by me.  

 

I sanded the chair and painted the arms and legs black.  I reupholstered the chair with fabric that coordinated with her living room.

The chair looks really nice in her living room.   My sister also took my advice with a little resistance I might add, and painted her end tables black.

A Candlelight Roo….Oh, I’m In Love!

It’s true!  This rooster lights up my life. 

If you know me and follow my blog, you know I love candles and I light them all the time.  Mr. Roo here has an opening so that you can place a tea light inside. 

I was shopping at Ross’ the other day and I found Mr. Roo.   I didn’t think twice about this purchase.    

It didn’t take me long  to find him a place in my kitchen.  I created a new vignette just for him on my kitchen table.  

The picture below is just me playing in Picasa 3 Photo Editing.  I was trying to soft focus the picture.  I think I still need to practice.

Seven Things My Husband Said About Me

The other day, I was awarded the Versatile Blogger Award from Okie Chic.  I don’t usually participate in blogger awards  but what I thought would be fun is have my husband, Charlie, participate and  tell you seven things about me. 

I can’t list all of the things he said about me because this is a family blog but here are seven things that he did say that I can list: 

1. Loves all kinds of music.
2. Will be attending her first concert this June.
3. Was 40 before her 1st flight on a plane.   
4. Rarely shops for herself.
5. Snores.
6. Has a positive attitude and rarely ever says anything negative.
7. Sweetest/kindest woman I know.

This was fun!  Now it’s his turn. I’m going to give him a list of seven things people don’t know about him, privately.

Antique Flea Market Finds

Over the weekend Charlie and I went to an Antique Flea Market in Fredericksburg Virginia.  They were advertizing 400 vendor booths,  but I don’t really believe there was that many.  I surprised myself and only came home with a few things.  

I finally found a child’s wooden shoe.   I paid $3.00 for it.    I have been looking for one for a while now.   

I found some wooden letterpress letters.  I bought the letters “Y'” for my daughter-in-law and of course the letters “F” are for me.  

An old white porcelain door knob with the hardware attached and a pair of skeleton keys also found their way home with me.  

I found a pair of old spindles.  I love the color. 

A copper dish. 

And I’m not exactly sure what these are; vases or goblets but there was a set of 12 at .50 cents a piece so I bought all 12 of them.  My plans are to use them in the dining room.  

My only regret after I got home was not purchasing some old vintage Valentines cards.  There was a vendor that had tons of them.  Charlie and I looked at them and we both reminisced about our childhood and how much we loved giving and receiving Valentine’s Day cards at school.  The funny thing about it, the vendor had cards there that I remember giving and receiving.  Oh well, maybe next time.

What I Wore Last Wednesday

Lindsey at the Poppy Pleated is having a linky party called What I Wore Wednesday so I thought I would join in on the fun for the first time. 

Last Wednesday, one of the biggest ACC Young Men’s Basketball rivalry games was played at the Comcast Center and we had tickets to go. 

It’s no secret in our family that when it comes to ACC Men’s College Basketball I’m in a mixed marriage.  My husband Charlie is a huge Maryland Terps fan and I’m a Duke Blue Devils fan.

To show support for my Duke Blue Devils, I wore my Duke Basketball Tee-shirt which was given to me as a Birthday gift.  The black belt was a purchase from Ross and the boots I purchased at Payless Shoe Store.

Charlie hasn’t a clue where his clothes came from, but he says they are comfortable and that’s all that matters.

Needless to say, I was surround by so much red that I had to secretly cheer my Duke Blue Devils on to a victory!  

All in all it was a fun night considering it was a 9:00 p.m. game.  You see Charlie and I get up at 4:00 a.m. thru the weekdays because of his work schedule.  On our way home from the game, Charlie was pulled over by a State Trooper doing 65 in a 50 mile an hour zone.  Lucky for him, he only got a warning!  We got home at 1:00 a.m.  The next morning, I must have hit that snooze button fifteen times.  You could say we definitely weren’t bright eyed and bushy tailed on Thursday.
