Long before my Dad got sick, he was cleaning out one of his sheds and generated a pile of stuff that he was throwing away. Being the junky that I am, I went through his pile of stuff and one of the things that I pulled out was his work bench that he made a long time ago.
When I brought it home, I put it in my shed and that’s where it stayed until just the other day. I was in my shed moving things around and there it was. I forgot all about it being in there. It was buried with all my other shed treasures.
As you can see, he used this work bench through the years. It has many different colors of paint splatters and plenty of saw marks.
I can still remember that day when I asked him if I could have his work bench and he said to me “what are you going to do with that thing”. Well Dad, this is what I’ve done with that thing.
I’m using it as a night stand in my guest bedroom.
I stained the top and bottom with a water based wood stain. I used Miniwax Natural Wood Stain on the top and River Stone on the bottom. I used water based wood stain because I didn’t want to completely cover-up the workmanship and worn labor of love on the bench.
I’m so glad I found it in my shed! I love having it in my guest bedroom. I can see my Dad now just shaking his head and saying “the things you come up with”.
Thanks for stopping by and may your day be filled with lots of sunshine and all the happiness it can hold.
Gail

Hi Gail,
ReplyDeleteThat looks great!!! I love it, my dad had one years ago, I wish I had gotten hold of it then. I would love to use it now. I love the mantel in your guest room, too! You are one creative lady!
Did I tell you that Brian is now home and his brother has signed up and is now in training. He had just recently gotten married, so he has left his new bride in order to go to boot camp. My sister is not very happy with him. But, she is very happy to have Brian back on home soil.
Have a sweet and sunny day,
Big hugs, Cindy
What a great story and reminder that sometimes a piece had to "speak" to us before we know exactly where it belongs. Your use of your daddy's bench in this room is perfect and it sounds like your daddy was like mine....just shaking his head over the ideas that we come up with. Thank you for sharing.
ReplyDeleteO, girl...you did an awesome job of making this look GREAT, while retaining the original beauty of it. I LOVE IT...and now, I WANNA MY DADDY'S WORKBENCH. But it is loooong gone. bwaaaaa
ReplyDeleteWhat a great repurpose for a special piece with such great memories attached to it! It all looks fantastic, really love your repurposed mantle / headboard too!

GREAT story!!!
ReplyDeleteMy Dad also had interesting stuff around! His pet name for my Mom was "Old Woman". Everytime I hauled something home, I would hear him say "Old Woman, she's takin' junk home again. What in the world does she want THAT for?" Then he would be so proud if my idea turned out well...and tell everybody" That Jackson just takes all sorts of junk and uses it everywhere in her house". What a sweet memory...thank you sooooo much!!
