The other day I shared a glimpse of a piece of furniture that I painted over the weekend. That piece of furniture was a curio cabinet that sits in the upstairs hallway.
This is what it looked like before.
It was a gift from my parents back in the 80’s. I have to tell you, I was seriously thinking about getting rid of it. I had grown tired of the dolls, knick knacks and the oak finish. BUT now that it’s painted….I feel differently.
I used Annie Sloan chalk paint.
First I painted the entire piece with country gray and then lightly brushed graphite here and there. After it dried, I sprayed water and wiped it down to show signs of wear. Next, I applied dark wax.
Instead of filling the cabinet back up with all the dolls and knick knacks, I filled the cabinet up with things I had around the house.
I placed my small collections of wooden bobbins and some small quilts inside.
The only doll that I placed inside was my bride doll. She was given to me for Christmas when I was 13. She will be 39 years old this coming Christmas.
Isn’t it amazing what a little paint can do to an outdated piece of furniture. I think I’m going to keep it, at least for a little while anyway. I have more painting projects going on in the hallway so be sure to come back and see what I’m up to next.
As always, thanks for visiting and have a wonderful day.
Gail

Definitely a keeper Gail, I love it's new look inside and out!!
ReplyDeleteit looks great Gail and I love the items you choose to put in it.
ReplyDeleteyou are so talented.
Your cabinet looks great, and I like the freshened arrangement too.
ReplyDeleteLooks like a totally new/old piece. I WOULD KEEP IT.
ReplyDeleteYour displays add to the character.
Your curio has some nice moldings on it, Gail! I have a round front curio in oak that I was thinking about painting so that it would go better with our current decor. Seeing yours might just give me the courage to go ahead and just do it! I have my Lladro collection in mine {and I'd leave them} but I really think the oak could use some updating.
ReplyDeleteYour curio looks fabulous! I love the new paint color...what an incredible transformation!!! Happy Valentine's Day :o)

ReplyDeleteGail; that piece turned out just beautiful--I love the tan/grey color--this is what I'm wanting for my outdated cherry-finished entertainment center! I love it--thank you for inspiring! (and I love your new decorating inside that awesome cabinet too)

ReplyDeleteGail, this is a beautiful cabinet and now that you have transformed it, it is stunning. It draws the eye to it to see what is special inside. Great job.
ReplyDeleteIt doesn't even look like the same piece of furniture Gail, great job on it, I'll be back to see what else your up to!
ReplyDeleteOh Gail, this curio is stunning! Wow - I saw one at a garage sale a few weeks ago and passed it by because I thought, ugh - so outdated! I need to think out of the box with furniture and start refinishing again - been years, and paints have changed dramatically!
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for sharing! I can't believe you left all those little nick nacks in it when you painted it!
Blessings for a wonderful Valentine's Day!

Thanks for the inspiration. I, too, have a curio that desperately needs to be updated or chunked. Yours turned out beautifully.
ReplyDeleteLove the color, what a great transformation! The new arrangement is wonderful as well!
ReplyDeleteAmazing. Love the change. I will be showing this post to my hubby so he can re-do mine! Thanks for the idea of putting the quilts inside, that is just great. This project will have to come after the two bathrooms get re-done. Following your blog is so much fun since we have the same stuff going on!
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing, I really enjoy your blog.
Looks good, although some other clever lady would of snapped it up had you got rid of it.

It looks wonderful! I have a curio that I'm not wild about...maybe it would help if I just placed something different in it. Right now it houses a collection of Cherished Teddies and other keepsakes. But then what would I do with all of them...hmmm! Oh, well...maybe someday.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad you didn't get rid of that piece, it looks fabulous painted and restyled!! That really is an awesome transformation!
ReplyDeleteJane

Well that sure brought it up to date. Looks awesome Gail!
ReplyDeleteWOW!!!!! So beautiful. I love your curio cabinet. Such a great job.
ReplyDeleteDid you sand before your started or use a de-glosser? What about the inside, I have wood inside my cabinet and wondering it it is worth it to paint that also, can't really tell from the photos what you eneded up doing.
ReplyDeleteThanks for your help, excited to transform my cabinet.
Stunning story there. What occurred after? Take care!
