Cutting Boards, Ladle and a Mirror

What a disappointment!  I spent less than a half an hour at the Yard Sale/Auction on Saturday where I bought two cutting boards and a ladle.  I spent a total of ONE dollar.

There was absolutely nothing on display at the auction that I really wanted to sit and wait for.   The yard sale started at 7:00 a.m. and the auction was scheduled to start at 9:00 a.m.  Charlie and I left there and went to our local Flea Market where I bought a door mirror for $1.

I  have a plan for the mirror and I’m working on it now.

I guess the day wasn’t a complete disappointment because when we got home, I started working on the cutting boards.  Take a look at what I did.

This was the larger one.  I cut two inches off of each side, sanded it and applied a dark walnut stain.  I attached the ladle and placed a candle inside.

And now the smaller one.

I sanded this one too and applied a dark walnut stain.  After I applied the stain, I wiped most of it off.  I used an image from the Graphics Fairy then I used the Woodworker's Transfer Tool to burn the image on the cutting board.  This was my first time using the transfer tool.  You can see on the upper right corner where the heating iron was too hot and I burned the cutting board!  Oh well, it adds a little more character to the cutting board don’t you think?

As soon as we see some sunshine around here, I’ll take pictures of the changes I’ve made in the kitchen.

As always, thanks for your visit and your sweet comments.  They always make my day!

  1. That looks great Gail. I love the rustic old look and it is NOT. A dollar well spent.

  2. Great idea with the cutting board a ladel, looks great next to the grater all lit up! Can't wait to see what you do with the mirror and your kitchen!

  3. Gail..... more flipping clever ideas! Can't wait to see what you have planned for the mirror. OH, and I also noticed the cheese grater as a candle cover. Maybe you think those things are just simple little ideas, but I've never seen them before so to me they are darn clever.

  4. You did great for $1.00, Gail! The cutting boards turned out neat! I like the one with the ladle candleholder you did. Very creative. It goes well with your grater! : )

  5. You are so creative.... and clever!!!! I would have never thought of turning the cutting board into a candle sconce! The other cutting board looks fabulous too! Can't wait to see what you come up with next :o)

  6. I hate when I get all geared up to find something, then find nothing! You did a great job on your few finds though. I love ladles & dippers. I have two dippers that belonged to my grandmother. We used to drink water from the well with them:)

  7. You made great use of your $1.00!! Love what you did with the cutting boards, they look wonderful!

  8. You are just TOO creative coming up with how you used those cutting boards! So cute! I do like the burn hole in the smaller one. I didn't know what it was, but it instantly ages it. You sure know how to find the deals!

  9. Oh your cutting board creations are fabulous. How genius is that. Love it. Hugs, Marty

  10. How adorable are those! Really like the second one...the burn makes it look more authentic and rustic!

  11. Oh my word, girl, I love what you've done with both cutting boards, you're so creative! I haven't got a clue how to add a graphic to wood. Is there a certain formula? I would love to do that, I have no idea where I would put it, but it would be so pretty. I love yours.
And the candle holder, TOO CUTE.
I think you've been even busier than me! And that is saying something, I haven't ever done so much creatively in my whole life.
    Hugs, Cindy

The ladle and the candle add the perfect touch!
