What Would You Call It…..A Burlap Doily?

I made one and I’m not sure what to call it…..a burlap doily, tablecloth or a table scarf?

014

Well for now we’ll just call it a burlap doily unless you bloggers should say differently.  Anyway,  the other day I was cleaning out the closet and I came across two yards of burlap in my fabric stash.  With that much burlap I thought maybe I’ll just try and make a burlap doily for the kitchen table.

Don’t laugh but for the circular pattern I used one of our trash can lids .  I traced the lid on the burlap with a pencil and cut it out.  (The lid worked great!)

005

We all know that burlap will ravel and I wanted to add a ruffle so I used Fabric Fusion to keep it  from unraveling.  This stuff worked great!

007

I cut 4” strips of burlap for the ruffle and gathered it by hand stitching.

008

I pinned the ruffle to the circle and machine sewed it.

Considering I’m a self-taught sewer and the fact that I did this on the cuff, I’m happy with the way it turned out.  023

  20. I love your table doily (I think that's a great name). It's a very original way to use burlap to create a table covering. I'm impressed you hand sewed and gathered the ruffle!!
